(MAFA) Conference 2023

About half of our membership attended this year’s MAFA conference for fiber arts classes, the vendors’ market, exhibits, inspiration, and camaraderie. By all accounts, the experience was extremely worthwhile. A few images from the event are posted here.

Three Rivers Fiber Focus at the 2023 Maple Fest

The 2023 Beaver County Maple Festival was held on April 22 and 23 at Brady’s Run Park, and TRFF members set up and demonstrated carding, handspinning, and weaving both days. Attendance was fair due to less than ideal weather, but those who visited were excited that TRFF is a teaching group located at Old Economy Village. Many thanks to Debbie, Sandy, Kenny, and Beth for spending their weekend at the Maple Festival and getting the word out!

Rigid Heddle Weaving Workshop at the NHAC, May 2022

Our very first Rigid Heddle Weaving Workshop at the North Hills Art Center was a success. All students left with a finished piece, as warped looms were provided at the start. Several students expressed an interest in learning the direct warping method for rigid heddle looms, perhaps a topic for discussion at our next meeting. Many thanks to those who organized, warped looms, taught, assisted, or otherwise prepared for this workshop, as well as to the North Hills Art Center for use of their facility. We hope to do it again. Please see our images below from May’s workshop, including a sampling of weaving that can be created on a rigid heddle loom!

Waynesburg Fleece to Shawl competition

On May 18, 2019, Three Rivers Fiber Focus participated in the Waynesburg Fleece to Shawl Competition, with two teams consisting of five individuals that included three spinners, a carder, and a weaver. This was TRFF’s first competition; the teams included both beginners and seasoned competitors. One team chose the theme of Flower Children, reflecting the timeline of their childhood. The second team’s theme was Into the Woods, a popular movie musical. Both teams provided painted warps to create their own specific color designs.

Listed below are the teams that competed and their placement after judging of the shawls was complete.

First Place
First place went to Loyalhannon Spinners. Their theme was Bees; their weaving structure is known as denting.

Second Place
Second place went to the Butler Spinners and Weavers Guild. Their theme included natural dyeing and use of combs to open their fleece.

Third Place
Third place went to Three Rivers Fiber Focus, with a theme of flowers and a painted warp.

Fourth Place
Fourth place went to the second group from Three Rivers Fiber Focus, with a theme of Into the Woods and a painted warp.
